After the New Order era was overthrown by reform activists, life and the government system in Indonesia experienced significant changes in various sectors. This also affects my family life in particular. The glory days of my father's business began to decline and this had an impact on the family's internal life. So all my brothers and I chose our own paths.
After I grew up and took an educational path at a private university in Central Java, I experienced many obstacles adapting to the Indonesian education system which always prioritizes numbers and grades over developing individual qualities. That's what kept me from completing my bachelor's degree in education. Even though I have taken all the existing credits and have a final assignment or thesis left. I would rather change majors than finish. My interest in the world of art and design made me take a new course with a major transfer system at the Faculty of Engineering, specifically architectural engineering. Apart from that, many of the people around me chose the same field as the engineering faculty.
Interest in all fields creates curiosity about anything new. However, after just one semester, the feeling of incompatibility started to creep into my mind again. It's still a matter of the system as before. Where numbers are the main reference in determining each student's competency. The idealism in my head always rebels against all systems that I think are very old-fashioned. In my free time I always argue with my sister-in-law and older siblings at home. However, they always disagree with what I have in mind. We live in Indonesia and have to follow the existing system. "If you want to fight the system, then be prepared to stand alone," they said.
My dissatisfaction with all the systems was the beginning where I decided to go and look for new things. Choosing to work in the construction sector at one of the subcontractor companies in Jakarta. Coincidentally, my high school friend became a project manager there. So I could easily get in to work there, even though on paper I didn't meet the criteria. That's what this country is, as long as there are people inside and everything will run smoothly. That's where we all have to realize that reform is not much better than the New Order. Because in fact the practices of Corruption, Collusion and Nepotism are increasingly growing in our country. All of these things have mutated to become more virulent and of various kinds. Starting from the highest officials to the lowest levels in society.
Long story short, that afternoon I left with two people from the small town where I live. They are the people who will work with me in Cilegon Regency later. Because the project location is there. By continuing to communicate, my friend Ilham directed me to the work location. We arrived in the city of Cilegon the next day. Ilham picked me up at the terminal along with the two people who came with me. We just chatted a little on the road until we arrived at the mess where we were staying. We plan to live under the same roof at the Mess until the project is completed. After arranging all our luggage, we finally rested and were ready to work the next day.
The morning sun was rising and we woke up a little late because we were tired after yesterday's trip. The hot air made us sweat and made us a little uncomfortable. After everyone got up and prepared themselves, Ilham as the Project Manager gave a briefing to all the work members there, including me and the two people who went with me. He explained briefly about the project we would be working on later. The project is a Horizontal Directional Drilling project, which means we will carry out horizontal drilling underground.
The clock shows 09:00 WIB, this is the right time to start work. Ilham gave me a red long-sleeved shirt and PDL shoes. Before leaving, I asked him about what position I should hold. Ilham also explained that I act as Human Safety Environment or can be abbreviated as HSE. And has the duty to ensure work safety at the project location. After I understood in general what I had to do, I immediately moved to the work location and brought all the PPE for the employees who worked there. This includes road barriers, signs and fire extinguishers.
That day, Ilham continued to accompany me to work and continued to explain the new things I had to do. Until finally we finished the day's work quite well. Day after day passed with almost the same work. Until one day, Ilham told me to replace the red shirt I was wearing with a gray shirt with the same logo. Then he gave me a white helmet with a construction symbol and my name written on it. I was a little confused and asked inspiration about it. However, he still didn't want to tell me. We went together as usual. However, this time we head to the fabrication yard.
"Good morning sir, today we will move all these pipes to the drilling location to be welded, sir," said the bed guard. "Morning. Oh yes, let me introduce you, Mr H2S, he is the new supervisor here. He and Mr Jimin will work together in the field. So, if he needs anything and asks you for help, please just do it. Because, starting today I will be working in the mess and in 2 days I will go to Jakarta to get a new drill head," explained the inspiration to him. Suddenly the person blushed because yesterday he was shouting at the three of us as he pleased.
Starting today I know that Ilham has given me a new position at work, namely Field Supervisor. This is not without reason. One of the previous field supervisors worked at his own pace because he was a local resident who insisted on coming in and working on the project. Meanwhile, he knew that Ilham liked women, so his younger sister was ordered to come often and approach our PM. Still with dirty practices like this. The girl was a teller at a private bank and had a beautiful face. So, inspiration can no longer resist it. But, since his older brother worked on this project, he always caused problems and work was always delayed. That's what prompted Ilham to dismiss him and replace him with a new supervisor, namely me.
Day after day, month after month passed. However, the project was never completed as planned. This is because the project terrain is difficult and located in a coastal area. There are many super hard rocks that cannot be drilled using a drilling machine, so we have to use a manual digging team that we brought from the Garut area. The project target is 3 months until it reaches the Suralaya main guard. However, the fact is that in the field we cannot solve it even though we have been working for 8 months. The senior project manager came to the work site at that time. He was really angry and was going to slap us all. However, after we tried to explain and see the work location directly, he realized that it was impossible for us to complete this area in just 3 months.
Finally, after we held an impromptu meeting, we decided to bring in additional excavators and breakers to manually dig between the join pit and another join pit which is 90m away. The piloting team is led by Patra, he is a seasoned HDD boring operator who has been in this field for more than 10 years. The cast foreman was headed by Tedy, HDPE welding by Yasri, and a total of 37 workers. I myself monitor the manual excavation workers and the pit joint maintenance and HDPE welding section, while Jimin is in the boring section. Every now and then inspiration orders me to switch positions with Jimin to learn and understand all the work in that field.
The next day, we started working diligently. Maximizing the performance of excavators and breakers, as well as bringing in senior dump truck drivers from the company directly. Meanwhile, on the other hand, Patra continues to boost its drilling machines after we took several new drill heads from the company. Piloting, reaming, drilling, digging, tracking, and joining are jobs that fill our days. Continue to learn about work directly in the field.
Our hard efforts bore fruit in the middle of the ninth month, the project only had 1 more join pit remaining which leads directly to the Suralaya main guard. Where GI Suralaya is a supplier of electricity supplies to Jakarta. There are many additional procedures that we must comply with, because the project owner company is increasingly sending consultants to monitor our performance with high safety standards. Until the end of the 9th month, we managed to complete the project even though it had to take 3 times longer than what was planned.
I can tell you a little about the work system in the field and I have gained a lot of additional knowledge and experience. If we talk about salary, it's not that big. The salary I receive is the DKI Jakarta UMR standard. However, of course you are not a project worker if you don't play in it. That's where we get additional income. That's where I learned that apart from being strong, construction workers are individuals who want to think.
We successfully completed our first project with my colleagues, even though it didn't meet the deadline. However, the initial error came from the surveyor who was checking the work area. They weren't accurate so it was us who had to work extra hard afterwards. OK, let's go home.
After being given a week's leave by our superiors, we had to leave again for Maluku to work on land leveling and asphalting. Ilham and I left for a new project in Maluku, while Patra continued Drilling and Jerking in Cilegon. I worked for the company for almost two years until the time came for me to decide to get married. My wife didn't want me to stay and asked me to stay at home.
After getting married and not working anymore, I experienced financial difficulties. Because since getting married, at that time my father told me to take full responsibility and he would no longer help me financially. So I decided to open a small business such as selling food. However, entrepreneurship is much more difficult than working. Because we have to adjust to market tastes, location and capital management. Every effort I make is doomed to failure. So I decided to work again with my older cousin. He had just opened a plywood factory, after selling the wood saw and several other assets he had to buy the factory. In less than a year the factory went bankrupt and forced my older cousin to sell the factory to a new owner, leaving behind a large debt.
After the factory was sold to a new owner, I no longer worked there so in silence I thought again about opening a new business. For days I couldn't find the right business inspiration. Coincidentally, it was durian season in the area where I live. So I decided to join my brother in selling durian in the Rembang area, East Java, and finally Semarang. It's quite profitable even though it's only a small business, every 3 days we supply 1 colt durian to Semarang. But unfortunately, my business was again hit by failure because other suppliers stocked truckloads of goods from Sumatra. And that's what killed my durian sales.
Not giving up, I started racking my brain again about opening a new business. Coincidentally, at that time I had a hobby of keeping animals because I didn't work anymore. Such as ornamental fish and ornamental rabbits. That's where the inspiration to open a new business emerged. I decided to make a farm for ornamental rabbits and Etawa goats. At that time the financial condition was not good and this was a reason to borrow funds online from the bank. Of course, with the remaining money I have too.
I started this business because it was based on love for animals and the results were quite promising. Initially I took seeds from several large breeders in the world of rabbit farming. I breed several breeds of decorative rabbits. However, my interest falls on the two largest breeds of rabbits, namely, the Flemish giant and the German giant or what some breeders from the United Kingdom call the Continental giant. These two breeds are the largest breeds of rabbits which both originate from mainland Europe, the difference is that the German giant was developed in Europe, while the Flemish giant was developed and introduced in America. Apart from the ins and outs and origins, these two rabbits have significant differences (for rabbit breeders of this breed). However, it is difficult for ordinary people to recognize these characteristics.
I have two cages the size of a house to breed these rabbits. Apart from that, I also have a small etawa goat farm. Incidentally, my uncle is the chairman of HPKSI (Indonesian Art Goat Breeders Association) so I often learn about etawa goats from my uncle. One of the mascots of the stable is Pajera, a direct descendant of Birawa, who held 1st place in national class A before being defeated by Mister Bejo, the most expensive goat worth 1 billion rupiah from East Java who won the presidential cup or the equivalent of 1st place in national class A.
Returning to ornamental rabbit breeding, my interest in rabbit business and cultivation finally introduced me to many breeders who agree. Several contests were held to determine what deficiencies needed to be addressed in the rabbit's physical form and quality. On the other hand, we also look for awards for rabbits that are classified as good. Several times we even brought in judges from ARBA (American Rabbit Breeder Association) to provide direct judging. That was the beginning of my getting to know several well-known breeders in America and Europe. So one day, several friends and I, who were obsessed with looking for world-class German Giant and Flemish Giant rabbit seeds, decided to come to a rabbit contest in Oklahoma to adopt several superior American Flemish Giant rabbit seeds directly without intermediary animal importers.
Twice I adopted directly from leading breeders abroad, America for the Flemish giant and Slovakia for the German giant. Most people don't believe that my rabbits are imported from America and Europe. After several buyers from Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines came to adopt it, people believed it. In fact, it's not uncommon for me to handle shipping abroad myself.
From many things I know many people from abroad, interact and understand their characteristics. Actually, I have known the characteristics of western people since my university days. Because it was my outdoor hobby that brought him there. Mountaineering, climbing, hiking, fast flowing sports and also trail running and many others. From here I will also tell you about my special relationship with a girl from Germany, a double degree student at an arts institute in Central Java. She is...[to be continued] H2S
